PRIVACY POLICY

Your audio and transcripts stay under your control.

This policy explains how the LocalScribe website and LocalScribe Chrome extension handle information.

Effective date: September 1, 2026

Summary

LocalScribe is designed to transcribe audio on your device. We do not operate a transcription API, require an account, sell personal information, or use audio and transcripts for advertising. Audio, video, and generated transcripts are not intentionally sent to LocalScribe or a transcription service.

Website transcription

When you select an audio or video file, record from your microphone, create speaker labels, edit a transcript, or export a file on freelocaltranscription.com, processing occurs in your browser. Selected recordings and generated transcripts are not uploaded to a LocalScribe server.

Chrome extension

The extension captures audio only from a tab you explicitly authorize by clicking the LocalScribe toolbar icon and then starting capture. It processes captured audio locally and displays the resulting transcript and timestamped segments in the side panel.

  • Tab capture does not start automatically.
  • Captured audio is held temporarily for local processing and is not permanently stored by LocalScribe.
  • Transcripts and timestamps may be kept in Chrome session storage so the current result survives extension service-worker restarts.
  • You decide whether to copy or download TXT, SRT, or VTT files.

Browser storage and diagnostics

LocalScribe uses browser-local storage for operational state, the tab you explicitly authorized, model-readiness markers, current-session transcripts and timestamp segments, and a limited diagnostic log. Diagnostic entries can include technical events, errors, model choice, extension context, and basic authorized-tab metadata such as its URL or title. These logs remain in Chrome storage and are not automatically transmitted to LocalScribe or an analytics provider.

You can remove this data by clearing the extension’s storage, removing the extension, or clearing the site’s browser data. Chrome may also remove cached data according to its own storage policies.

Model downloads and third parties

LocalScribe downloads speech-recognition model data from Hugging Face and its delivery infrastructure during initial setup, when you select a model that is not available locally, or after Chrome removes cached model data. Optional website speaker-label features may download additional model data.

These providers may receive standard network information needed to deliver files, such as your IP address, user agent, request time, and requested model-file URL. LocalScribe does not add your captured audio, transcript, or webpage content to model-download requests. Model data is processed by executable JavaScript and WebAssembly packaged with the extension or delivered with the website.

The website is hosted using Cloudflare infrastructure. Like most hosting providers, Cloudflare may process standard request information needed for security and delivery, such as IP address, user agent, requested URL, and request time, under its own policies.

Data we do not collect

LocalScribe does not intentionally collect names, email addresses, payment details, passwords, precise location, health information, browsing history, personal communications, captured website audio, or transcript content. We do not include advertising, behavioral tracking, or third-party analytics SDKs in the current product.

Permissions used by the extension

  • activeTab and tabCapture: authorize and capture audio from the specific tab chosen by the user.
  • sidePanel: display controls, progress, transcript results, and exports beside the webpage.
  • offscreen: maintain authorized audio capture, preserve playback, decode audio, and run local transcription.
  • storage: retain operational state, model readiness, session results, and local diagnostics.
  • Host access: download pinned model data from Hugging Face delivery domains. It is not used to read webpage content.

Retention and control

LocalScribe does not maintain a server-side account or transcript history. Browser-session information normally lasts for the browser session, while model files and compatibility markers can remain in browser storage until Chrome evicts them or you clear them. Downloaded transcript files remain wherever you save them and are under your control.

Children’s privacy

LocalScribe is a general-purpose transcription tool and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when LocalScribe’s features or data practices change. The effective date shown above will be updated when a revised policy is published.
